How far can a Haneda layover take you?

Further than you think. Immigration, a train, and a plan — here is what fits each window, with verified travel times.

Pick your window

Under 4 hours: stay put

Not worth leaving. Clear a lounge, shower, and eat — Terminal 3 covers all three without immigration risk.

4-6 hours: Yokohama

¥370 · 24 min

The closest big city to Haneda — a direct Keikyu train reaches Yokohama in 24 minutes. Chinatown, the harborfront and coffee within a compact walkable core.

6-8 hours: central Tokyo

¥540 · 29 min

Tokyo Station is about 29 minutes of ride time away. Enough for Asakusa or the Imperial Palace area plus a proper meal — with a guided loop being the time-safest way to see more.

8+ hours: a real day out

Guided day trips to Kamakura or a structured Tokyo highlights tour become realistic. Book something with a fixed end time and build in a buffer.

Always clear immigration timing with your airline first — you must be back through security with time to spare, and re-entry queues vary by hour. How early to be at security →

Good to know

Can I leave Haneda Airport during a layover?

Only if you can enter Japan: leaving the airport means going through immigration, and our guide to leaving the airport on a layover, linked below, sets out the conditions with official sources.

How much buffer should I keep?

Work backwards from boarding, not departure. Add the return ride time, security and immigration re-entry, and an hour of slack — trains are punctual here, but queues are not.

Where can I leave my luggage?

Coin lockers and staffed baggage counters operate at every Haneda terminal. Travel light and the layover doubles in usable time.
