The steps

Step 1
Create your account
Go to Visit Japan Web (services.digital.go.jp), register with an email address and set a password. One account can cover your whole family as co-travelers.

Register your travel details
Add your passport details (the camera scan is faster than typing) and your flight number.

Fill in immigration information
Complete the 'Disembarkation Card for Foreigner' section: purpose of visit, length of stay.

Fill in the customs declaration
Answer the customs questions honestly (cash over the threshold, restricted goods).

Show your QR code on arrival
Visit Japan Web now shows a single QR code that covers both immigration and customs. Screenshot it before you fly — airport Wi-Fi queues are real. Present it at the immigration counter, then at the customs electronic declaration terminal on your way out.
At Haneda — as at Fukuoka and Naha — you can complete the customs electronic declaration at a terminal while you wait for your baggage at the carousel. Do it there and your customs declaration is finished before you reach the exit.

When should I register?
Before you fly — doing it at the gate on airport Wi-Fi is the stressful version.
