Arrival paperwork

Visit Japan Web, step by step

Register before you fly and you walk through immigration and customs with a single QR code instead of paper forms. Fifteen minutes online saves queue time on arrival.

Start here (official)

Use the government's own service: Visit Japan Web — Digital Agency. For screen-by-screen help, see the official instruction manual (English).

The steps

  1. Step 1

    Create your account

Go to Visit Japan Web (services.digital.go.jp), register with an email address and set a password. One account can cover your whole family as co-travelers.

  2. Step 2

    Register your travel details

Add your passport details (the camera scan is faster than typing), your flight number and your first night's accommodation address — the hotel booking confirmation has everything you need.

  3. Step 3

    Fill in immigration information

Complete the 'Disembarkation Card for Foreigner' section: purpose of visit, length of stay. This replaces the paper card handed out on the plane.

  4. Step 4

    Fill in the customs declaration

Answer the customs questions honestly (cash over the threshold, restricted goods). This replaces the yellow paper customs form.

  5. Step 5

Show your QR code on arrival

Visit Japan Web now shows a single QR code that covers both immigration and customs. Screenshot it before you fly — airport Wi-Fi queues are real. Present it at the immigration counter, then at the customs electronic declaration terminal on your way out.

Haneda tip

At Haneda — as at Fukuoka and Naha — you can complete the customs electronic declaration at a terminal while you wait for your baggage at the carousel. Do it there and your customs declaration is finished before you reach the exit.

Good to know

Is Visit Japan Web mandatory?

No. You can still fill in the paper forms on the plane or at the airport. Visit Japan Web is faster at the airport, and it is the official, free way to skip the paperwork.

When should I register?

Any time before departure works. Do it when you book your first night's hotel — you need that address, and doing it at the gate on airport Wi-Fi is the stressful version.

Carrying prescription or over-the-counter medicine? Some quantities and ingredients need paperwork at customs — see bringing medication into Japan.
